Separate beaches for men and women

2 Aug

This past week I had the pleasure of going to women’s only beach in Herzliyah.  The beach’s name is called “The separate beach” and in Hebrew it is called “חוף הנפרד”.  On Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday the beach is open only for women and on  Monday, Wednesday and Friday it is only open for men.

Israel has a large population of ultra orthodox and they do not go mix swimming.  A lot of the major beachside cities have a “separate beach” that most people who are not ultra orthodox do not know about.

So what brought me to an all women’s beach? My nieces. My sister is ultra orthodox and is raising her children in that world. She invited me to join her and her two eldest girls at the beach during their summer break.

Now I grew up by the beach. I have wonderful memories of going with my grandparents to Brighten Beach in Brooklyn as a young child.  I went to school and camp in Long Beach and as a family, we went to East Rockaway’s beach/pool. Yeah, they had a pool *on* the beach.

So when the opportunity presented itself to go with my sister, her girls and our visiting mom, I jumped at the chance. I mean, I’ve been to separate beaches before so I knew what to expect. I was a little concerned that the beach was not accessible by public transportation but I quickly found out that the beach is a kilometer ( a little over half a mile) away. Phew. Public transportation and walking distance. Perfect.

It was wonderful to play in the sea with my family. We really frolicked in the sand/sea and we taught the girls to jump over the waves,  collect seashells, dig and build in the sand.

These are the memories that last a lifetime.

Learned Something New About Myself Today

22 Jan

I have been playing volleyball for about 15 years now. And I love playing. I even coached my old high school team during college before I transfered to Boston.

But for some reason, I couldn’t serve overhand. No matter how much I tried, I just couldn’t connect the ball and my hand at the right angle to go over the net. I found it incredibly frustrating.

Today we changed the time for volleyball (from 2pm to 11am) and for a while it was just me and the organizer of the volleyball game, Rob.

So we were volleying the ball back and forth. I gave him some tips to better control the ball (no fists!) and he in turn urged me to practice my overhead serve.

“But I can’t” I said. I’ve been trying for 15 years and I just cannot do it. Plus my other serve is a killer.

“Do it Berger!”

And so I tried. And I tried. and then a light bulb went off in my head and I switched the ball to my other hand. I threw it up in the air and POW, the ball went over the net.

I am ambidextrous in sports – and most of the time I favor my right hand (I am a leftie) but for some reason in volleyball I was trying to hit the ball with my left hand.

The minute I switched to hitting the ball with my right hand, bam bam bam the balls just kept flying over the net.

That is, until I got tired of playing in the sun after 3 hours.  Needed fuel to continue but I forgot my banana at home and so it was time to call it a day.

Until next week.

Beach Volleyball … in December

Every Saturday (as long as the weather permits) friends of mine play volleyball on the Gordon Beach.

Last week we had a monster storm and for some reason… most of the volleyball nets at Gordon beach were missing so we moved over to the next beach.
